This is one of the most amazing and less tiring hiking trips around the largest mountain range in Africa that stretches for 70km in length and 30km wide standing on the boarders of Uganda and the Democratic republic of Congo. The mountains of the moon as named by Sir Gerald Portal who was a British explorer are 5109m above sea level making them the 3rd highest mountains in Africa. The mountain range was formed due to faulting and this makes them one of the most scenic mountains with different vegetation covers at different heights accompanied by unique wildlife such as the 3 horned chameleons and breath taking views.
We therefore arranged the 8 days trip that takes you to this once in a lifetime adventure that will make appreciate the beauty in the pearl of Africa
5 nights and 6 days to Weismann’s peak, the itinerary runs as follows;-
Day 1- Briefing from the guides and start the trek, hike to Sine Camp at 2596m, the hike will take you through the tall forest trees of the Afro montane forest zone. This is a steady climb for about 6 kilometers then along a steep climb towards Sine hut. The hike will offer you lots of plant and flower species to view, birds and a chance of seeing some animal species like Columbus monkeys.
Day 2- Hike to Mutinda Camp at 3688m, through the Bambo and Heather-Rapanea Zone, following the trail while it meanders up and over several small knolls along a ridge top and drops down the side of the valley crossing several small streams and passing close to moss covered waterfalls with very unique beautiful plant and flower species found above 3000metres like Giant Heather trees whose trunks are covered in green moss with old man beards (Usnea lichen) hanging from the branches, approaching to Mutinda camp which is set near a small river and waterfall. In the afternoon one has an option of summiting Mutinda lookout at 3975m.
Day 3- The third day takes you through the valley of amazingly unique beautiful plant species, streams and waterfalls while we head to Bugata camp at 4100 m. The trek gets tougher and exhausting with the steep ridges, mud and boggy sections, high steps but the rewards are enormously beautiful.
Day 4- From Bugata Camp you get up early and head for the summit of Weismanns peak at 4620m. After the summit you start to descend back down to Bugata camp for the night
Day 5- Descend down through a loop past Kiharo camp to Samalira camp 3170m for the second last night this will offer you different views of the mountain as the loop takes you to a different side of the mountain
Day 6- Descend downhill past the moss covered rocks along rivers and beautiful forests back to the basecamp in Kilembe. Debrief and refresh. And that makes it 5nights and 6days in the Mountain. Kindly note that it’s not a must that you have to make it to the summit in case the summit becomes much tougher for you can always chose not to take it and just enjoy the beautiful landscape, flora and fauna in the Rwenzoris.
